Description
1939 Studebaker Commander
When this Studebaker Commander rolled off the assembly line in 1939, it had a function and it fulfilled that function very well. However, this is not '39 and this Studebaker has received a complete street rod restoration with a broad range of mechanical and cosmetic enhancements, a meticulous effort. According to the owner, the 2-owner Studebaker was rescued from its West Virginia barn in 2006 after over half a century of rest. The full restoration took three years (and no bondo). The car has won countless First Place trophies nationwide at Studebaker International meets. All trophies and awards are included along with the original 1939 license plate.
The flawless all-steel body has been carefully resprayed in original Grape Maroon color. The professional finish included six coats of base and six coats of clear. All chrome and stainless pieces were polished or replaced. Buick Roadmaster 15” aluminum wheels w/Studebaker logos mount Coker wide white radial tires. The stunning tan/brown cloth interior has been restored with correct upholstery in the original color and fabric. Upgrades incorporated into the classic interior include Vintage Air, tilt column w/Grant mahogany wheel, VDO classic gauges and electric wipers. A complete Painless wiring package has been installed, an AM/FM/Cassette sound system is concealed in the glove box and all window glass is original.
Horsepower is furnished by a '96 Corvette LT-1 small-block with factory fuel injection, Borsch electric fuel pump, serpentine belt set-up, HD aluminum radiator and dual electric fans. The Howell engine management system has been recalibrated to increase output and exhaust is routed through a custom system with 'glass packs'. A recent major tune-up included a new gel battery, alternator, water pump, ignition, belts hoses and a K&N filter. The transmission is a GM 4L60E 4-speed OD automatic. The chassis has been sub-framed with a Fatman Mustang II front clip, rack & pinion power steering, power disc/drum brakes, front sway bar and a '97 Roadmaster differential w/2.56:1 gears positioned on new HD leaf springs. This very rare, handsome Studebaker street rod will soon make its new owner very proud.
